Decided to experiment with working on Mi-Teintes coloured pastel card today. White Art Spectrum ink, Black Koh-I-Noor ink, Schminke watercolours.

Did this commission piece while I was there. It’s of Lucifer from the DC comics universe (Sandman and other Vertigo titles). Also Dave and I sold out of the comics we were selling which was a nice feeling.

Really enjoyed doing the old school drip nib style rendering for this, even though I was actually doing it with an artline.

A small run of prints of this painting will be available tomorrow at the Paper City Zine Fair, Melbourne Town Hall, 12pm – 5pm.

Kicked things off with some Bruce Timm influenced Batman. Some of the girls didn’t want to draw Batman though, so we did have a ninja, a dancing girl and a dragon man in the same pose.

Out of the three pages of sketches I recently did of Joe, mostly ones from memory rather than reference, this one “felt” the most like what I image Joe to be like. That said, the photo I’ve provided here doesn’t really have the same mood, but visually it was similar to the drawing I ended up with.

I keep on drawing Joe with a twitch of a smile, but sadly I don’t know that he will have much opportunity in the story to smile.

This week I also got hold of Truant Surgeon by Sir Earle Page thanks to the Goulburn Valley Regional Library.

I was hanging out for this because I was hoping Earle would reveal more of the circumstances around Joe’s death, but all he states is that “Lyons suffered a sudden heart and brain attack and died the next day”. Mostly he is upset at Menzies.

Earle does talk about Richard Casey a lot, which is reassuring as I had planned to make them allies in my story.

Still making my way through They Loved Him to Death by Brendan Lyons. This book so far has been most useful in providing the details of how Joe travels to Sydney before his death and who he travels with, which had been a big hole in my story previously.

In other exciting news I have also been learning about nitro glycerin which not only makes things explode, but was an early treatment for heart attacks. Go the mysterious powers of nitro glycerin!

Working away on my script at the moment, but here is a doodle of Harold Holt and some fish in the meantime.

It felt awkward to me to ink this with an artline marker pen, I really wanted to use a brush, but my younger students don’t have the dexterity to use brush for this kind of work yet.
